Fairfield P.D. to Get $56K from NJ for Automated License Plate Readers

FAIRFIELD, NJ -- At Monday’s Township Council meeting, Fairfield Mayor William Galese acknowledged that Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill has announced that 17 Essex County municipalities in the 11 Congressional District, including Fairfield, will be sharing $963,000 to help fund the purchase of automated license plate readers as part of a comprehensive joint law enforcement plan to help battle auto theft in Essex County.
Fairfield's Police Department should be receiving approximately $56,000.
The Fairfield Police Foundation will be holding a Steak and Scotch Night at the Franklin Steak House on Thursday, April 25, which coincides with the NFL draft night. Anyone interested in more information can connect Lt. RJ Casendino at the police department. All proceeds benefit the Fairfield Police Foundation.
Galese said that distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on the roads. Cell phone use, especially texting, talking and social media use, has become the most common distraction. April is designated as distracted driving awareness month. During a portion of distracted driving awareness month, from April 3-10, there will be increased law enforcement on the roadways as part of the national paid media campaign U Drive. U Text. U Pay. This campaign reminds drivers of the deadly dangers and the legal consequences, including fines, of texting behind the wheel.
On Saturday, March 3 several Fairfield police officers participated in the Snow Bowl, a flag football tournament, played at MetLife Stadium to benefit the New Jersey Special Olympics. Officers raised $3,000 to benefit the charity.
Councilman Peter Campisi reported on municipal alliance events. The police unity tour kick off will begin on May 8, senior luncheon on Wednesday, May 15 from 11:30 to 2 p.m., movies in the park on Sunday, June 14 and National Night Out on Tuesday, August 6.
According to Council President Joseph Cifelli Fairfield’s finance office has not received the new Property Tax Reimbursement (PTR) Blue Books for eligible senior citizens but will receive them shortly. The revised eligibility amount is for those earning less than $163,000 a year.
