Neenah council blocks mayor from using tax dollars for executive coach
Reader question: Why are Neenah taxpayers footing the bill for an executive coach for Mayor Brian Borchardt ? Shouldn't he pay for that? Answer: I received questions from three people about whether it was appropriate for the City of Neenah to pay $4,500 for Borchardt's executive coach. The expense wasn't included in the mayor's 2026 budget. Shortly after his election in April, Borchardt hired Dean Stewart , founder of Ascent Leadership Group of De Pere, to be his executive coach. They have met once a month. Borchardt initially intended to pay for the coaching himself but then learned that the Finance Department had money available – $2,900 in a training account and $1,600 in a wages account – to pay for the coaching. The money was transferred without the approval of the Finance and Personnel Committee and the Common Council. Borchardt acknowledged he didn't handle the budget transfers correctly. "I'll admit that I made a mistake and did not bring it to council or the finance committee," Borchardt told me. "That's a process that I wasn't aware of." To remedy the misstep, Borchardt introduced a resolution to ratify the budget transfers. The council voted 5-4 in favor of the resolution
