Pine Nuts: Best house dance ever (Opinion)
Away back in 1961, the SAE Fraternity at the University of Oregon held a House Dance in a barn out in Creswell, thirteen miles south of Eugene. I got there early with a date I had met that afternoon, hoping she might teach me how to dance before the party started, Peggy was her name. Anyway, we were standing around making small talk when a bus pulled onto the dirt lot that fronted the barn. The bus had a rocket painted on its side, and when the doors opened, outpoured the musicians that were contracted to play while we danced, or learned how to dance in my case.
Summer concert guide: An incredible schedule of legends and icons is headed to Oregon
Having broken the record for the most 90-degree days in May since 1878, the Portland area’s summer was off to a great start long before the solstice. There’s plenty going on this summer in Portland, as well other Oregon outdoor venues in Bend, Eugene and Troutdale. We kick-off the summer concert season with music legends Diana Ross and Janet Jackson playing dueling shows on June 20. Then we’ll close out the season with tourstops from Sam Smith and the ever-eclectic “little orchestra” Pink Martini at Grand Lodge.
A Flurry To The Season’s Finish
A busy concert season is on the verge of winding down with a series of performances this first weekend in June that cover all music bases. Chamber Music Amici — pianist Eunhye Grace Choi, violinist Sharon Schuman, violist Lillie Manis and cellist Steven Pologe — concludes its season with concerts Sunday, June 4, and Monday, June 5 at Wildish Theater in Springfield.
Animal Funding Restored
On May 24 the city of Eugene’s Budget Committee restored funding for the animal services provided by Greenhill Humane Society. Greenhill was facing a 56 percent cut in its funding from the city. That would, among other things, have meant Greenhill could no longer take in stray or lost and found animals except for dogs.
The Family Jam Band That Plays Anywhere
It’s in their name: Family Mystic puts on a show that’s family friendly. Family Mystic’s newest album, Adventures of Nemara, is a blossoming jam band extravaganza of sound, as their sophomore recording project is full of new musical adventures. Modern jam bands can get a bad rap, but Family Mystic puts its best foot forward with its sound, and it has found a lot of success and audience interest in Pacific Northwest parks and venue spaces.
For the Young, Stuffed And Young At Heart
If you go down in the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise. If you go down in the woods today, you’d better go in disguise. Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic. The Teddy Bear Picnic is a perfect family friendly summer event.
