Parents allege Mission Hospital missed child's illness

ASHEVILLE - A lawsuit filed by parents against Mission Hospital alleges that a Mission doctor failed to properly diagnose a seriously ill 2-year-old boy with Kawasaki disease, and the delayed diagnosis left him with long term medical problems. The lawsuit, filed Nov. 5 in Buncombe County Superior Court by Juan and Sarah Alvarado, states that on Nov. 3, 2023, the couple took their son, Silas, to Mission Hospital because he had been sick for two days with vomiting and diarrhea, fatigue, decreased appetite, neck pain, along with a one-day history of rash. That same day, Silas was admitted to Mission Hospital under the care of Dr. Jessica Saricicek, pediatrician on staff, who is also listed as a defendant in the lawsuit. Dr. Saricicek elected to treat Silas with broad-spectrum antibiotics, and discharged him the next day, November 4, 2023, according to the lawsuit. Rather than improving, Silas's condition worsened at home: He experienced redness of the eyes and lips, swollen hands and feet, and a persistent rash, the lawsuit stated. Within a day or two of Silas' initial discharge, the Alvarados were informed by Mission Hospital staff that cerebrospinal fluid culture from Silas' first admission had returned positive for possible

Spartanburg advances development agreement for NorthMark data center

At a special meeting on Oct. 22, Spartanburg County Council advanced a development agreement with the investors in a $2.8 billion data center on South Pine Street. The proposed agreement is part of the fee-in-lieu of taxes incentive package that the council granted to NorthMark Strategies in 2025 and is aimed at compelling the company to go beyond minimum noise, light and air quality requirements. NorthMark's affiliated companies − Valara Holdings LLC and Numara LLC − are identified in the development agreement. The Oct. 22 vote passed first reading of an ordinance to codify the agreement. Two more votes are required, and council member Grant DeShields said he hopes the council will finalize things before Christmas. DeShields was joined by council members Paul Abbott, Jack Mabry and chairman Manning Lynch in voting in favor of the ordinance. Monier Abusaft opposed the motion, and Jessica Coker did not attend the meeting. "We have some details we'd like to hash through to make sure both sides are in agreement," DeShields said. The NorthMark project is well underway on the site of the old Kohler plant. The development agreement would apply to remaining construction features and future inspections that DeShields hopes will mitigate
