Salem-Keizer students walk out to protest recent ICE activity
High school students across Salem-Keizer Public Schools walked out during lunch on Oct. 12 to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement amid increased activity in Salem. About 150 students gathered around 12:30 p.m. on Lancaster Drive NE and Market Street NE. Many held signs with phrases such as "fight ignorance not immigrants" and "privilege is when you think something is not a problem because you aren't affected." The walkout came after at least 30 people were tear-gassed by ICE agents on Lancaster Drive NE on Oct. 10 and a week that saw an an uptick in immigration enforcement around the Mid-Valley. The goal of the walkout was to show support for immigrant families and those affected by ICE and spread the message that no human is illegal, the protest organizer's post said. The protest was organized by McKay High School students. Natalii Segura, 17, a student at Roberts High School, said her family members are afraid to leave the house in fear of being detained by ICE. "I'm half white, on my mom's side, and half Mexican, thanks to my dad," Segura said. "It's not fair for us to have to live in fear of just simply going to everyday places."
