Judge orders new trial on death of infant
A man convicted in August of murder in the death of his infant son has won his request for a new trial. Ahmad Williams, 24, was convicted last summer of murder and felonious assault in the death of his 10-month-old son, Messiah Williams, in 2022. The boy died of a fatal brain injury that the prosecution argued was a result of abuse. In her ruling Thursday, Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Stacy Cook agreed with the arguments made by Williams’ attorney, Samuel Kaplan, that one juror’s comments during deliberations had an impact on the jury’s verdict. The defendant had claimed he accidentally dropped the child. During the trial, the county coroner’s office acknowledged that the injury could have been caused by a fall of about four feet or more, consistent with the claim of an accidental drop.
