His grandparents drive their RV from Lafayette to his and his wife Jamie Hernandez's farm in Simpsonville, Kentucky. Louisiana's Brian Hernandez Jr. is latest in line of successful horse jockeys from Acadiana
Brian Hernandez Jr. is the latest horse jockey from Acadiana to make history on the racetrack. Hernandez, 38, narrowly won the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs on a Shreveport horse named Mystik Dan. He is one of only eight jockeys to win both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby in the same year.

The 50th season of racing at Louisiana Downs Racetrack and Casino kicks off simultaneously with the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. The facility’s owner, Kevin Preston, said improvements were made at the track to encourage newcommers.
