    Officer shoots dog during incident on Elmira’s Southside

    Update, 5:37 p.m. — According to the Elmira Police Department, the dog survived the incident was given back to the owner.


    ELMIRA, N.Y. ( WETM ) — An Elmira Police Officer shot an aggressive dog during an incident on Elmira’s Southside on Tuesday afternoon, police say.

    According to the Elmira Police Department, an aggressive dog charged at an officer on Wallace Place at about 12:40 p.m. on May 7. The officer fired his weapon at the charging dog, and a bullet struck the dog.

    According to an 18 News Reporter at the scene, the dog appeared to be okay and was walking after the shooting. Police say the dog was being sent to a local animal hospital for treatment.

    Officers informed officials at the nearby Parley Coburn School District about the incident.

    The Elmira Police Department, Elmira Animal Control, the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, and the Elmira Fire Department responded to the scene.
