(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – An assistant track coach at west suburban York High School saved a student's life thanks to emergency training.

Elmhurst Mayor Scott Levin read a letter Monday night at this week's city council meeting from Rob Wagner, the York High School's assistant principal for athletics.

Wagner thanked the Elmhurst Fire Department for giving CPR training to the school's coaches.

One of those coaches performed CPR on a girl who collapsed during a track meet at Downers Grove North High School on April 12.

In the letter, the assistant principal of athletics said that a girl competing in triple jump collapsed for no reason. The assistant coach jumped into action performing CPR while others called 911 and the athletic training was on site with an AED.

The athlete was rushed to the hospital when first responders arrived.

“Thank you for teaching CPR to our staff,” Levin read from the letter. “Our coach did exactly what he was supposed to do in an emergency situation and everyone, from the EMTs to the doctor, stated that the early CPR saved her life.”

Neither the name of the coach nor the student have been released.
