'Tossed and Found' announces Charitable Grant recipients
Elma, IA.-- The the Tossed & Found thrift store announced the recipients of its March 2024 Charitable Grant Program. The non-profit store opened in mid-year 2008 and is under the fiscal oversight of The BRIDGE Organization Inc. Located at 321 Main Street, across from Security State Bank, the store accepts donations of good, used items, then resells them with net proceeds given out to 501c3 non-profit or government entity groups in the communities of Elma, Alta Vista, Lourdes & Riceville for community better projects & programs. Grants are awarded in two annual grant cycles each year-- March and September. The 2024 March cycle resulted in a total of $5000 being awarded to qualified applicants/projects and since 2008 the store has awarded over $38,000 toward community projects, as well as purchasing over $26,500 in “Welcome to Elma “ banners and donating over $550 in its annual Kid’s Shopping Day each December for local youth.

Mitchell County man accused of savagely beating a woman pleads not guilty
OSAGE, Iowa – A man accused of viciously beating a woman and then brawling with law enforcement in Mitchell County is pleading not guilty. Anthony Nicholas Evenson, 31 of Riceville, is now set to stand trial beginning June 5 for domestic abuse assault, and four counts of assault on persons in certain occupations.
What to expect for rain the rest of this week
The heavier, more consistent rainfall has wrapped up at this point. We still have isolated thunderstorms possible Thursday night. They would occur east of I-35. These storms will be wrapped up by about 10 PM at the latest. We do not have nearly the spin in our atmosphere that we had earlier Thursday afternoon (despite not having significant shear). Translation, odds of having another situation like what happened in Charles City are MUCH lower for Thursday evening.
Iowa cattle feedlot's manure pollution apparently went undetected for years, DNR says
A cattle feedlot in northeast Iowa likely polluted a creek for years during heavy rainfall, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The feedlot near Elma, owned by Curtis Fox, has about 650 cattle and is small enough that it’s not required to have a state-approved plan for managing its manure. This Thursday afternoon has been one to remember to say the least. A funnel cloud was spotted south of Charles City around 1:15 PM. Our newsroom has gotten plenty of photos of the funnel, but none to confirm if the tornado touched down. If you have photos or video of it on the ground, we will take it.
