    Celebrations: Jordan inducted as American College of Radiology Fellow

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Dr. George L. Jordan III, chief of the medical staff at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center and a partner at Eastern Radiologists, was inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Radiology at the ACR’s annual convocation in the nation’s capital on April 14.

    To qualify for membership as ACR Fellow, the applicant must complete 10 years of membership in the ACR and “exhibit a commitment to exceptional patient care in radiology.”

    Brumsey graduates from University of GeorgiaATHENS, Ga. — Emma Brumsey of Currituck County was among the 8,000 University of Georgia graduating seniors who were celebrated at the school’s commencement ceremony Friday, May 10. Brumsey graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in public relations.

    PCI’s Cherry named Correctional Officer of Year Andre Cherry, a correctional officer at Pasquotank Correctional Institute, was named earlier this month the 2024 Correctional Officer of the Year for PCI during the N.C. Department of Adult Correction’s annual awards ceremony for its Division of Institutions. Cherry was one of the 55 correctional officers statewide who earned the honor.

    ECSU’s Turner earns DKG Educational ScholarshipDelta Kappa Gamma Pi Chapter has named Kenae Ania Turner, a senior at Elizabeth City State University majoring in the education of children from birth to kindergarten, its Educational Scholarship recipient for 2024. A member of the ECSU International Ambassador’s Program, Turner is currently studying abroad in Tokyo, Japan.

    The Delta Kappa Gamma Pi Chapter also elected new officers for 2024 during its May 8 meeting: Virginia Arrington, president; Wendy Channell, 1st vice president; Michelle Flach, 2nd vice president; Rachel Gragson, treasurer; Denna White, vice treasurer; Teri Doughtie, secretary; and Cindy Turner, corresponding secretary.

    The chapter, a professional honor society for women educators, also inducted two new members: Bonnie O’Neal and Renee Perry.

    16 area residents named to SNHU President’s List

    MANCHESTER, N.H. — Sixteen area residents were named to the Winter 2024 President’s List at Southern New Hampshire University. The private university’s winter term runs from January to May.

    Area students making the list included Elizabeth City residents Kelly Montgomery, Amber Anderton, Esmeralda Hernandez, Aaliyah Felton, Austin Cross, Thomas Hooker, Christopher Bedard, and Daniel Grullon; Camden resident Tabitha Webb; Edenton resident Amanda Bunch; Hertford residents Justina O’Handley and Angela Richards; and Moyock residents Nicole Keller, Shelby Ognissanti, Daniel Fantino and Sean Finch.

    To make the SNHU President’s list, undergraduates must be full-time and earn a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 for the reporting term.

    Ten agencies earn Gold Awards from Labor Department

    AHOSKIE — Ten area government agencies and businesses were honored with safety awards by the N.C. Department of Labor during its annual Safety Awards banquet May 9 at Roanoke-Chowan Community College in Ahoskie. The awards honored the recipients’ “outstanding on-the-job safety achievements” during 2023, the labor department said.

    Under program rules, companies and agencies honored must be free of fatal accidents at the site for which the award is given. The gold award criteria are based on a DART (days away, restricted, or transferred) rate that is at least 50% below the statewide rate for its industry. The rate includes cases of days away from work, restricted activity or job transfer.

    Gold Awards

    First year: City of Elizabeth City, Planning/Community Development Department; city of Elizabeth City, Water Treatment Plant/Wastewater Treatment Plant Department.

    Second consecutive year: City of Elizabeth City, Parks and Recreation Department.

    Third consecutive year: City of Elizabeth City, Electric/Load Management Department.

    Fifth consecutive year: City of Elizabeth City, Finance/IT/Data Processing Department; City of Elizabeth City, Purchasing Department.

    11th consecutive year: City of Elizabeth City, Human Resources Department.

    12th consecutive year: City of Elizabeth City, Public Works — GIS Fleet Department.

    14th consecutive year: City of Elizabeth City, Administration.

    21st consecutive year: Piedmont Natural Gas, Elizabeth City Operations Center.
