In Wisconsin's Amish country, health care workers confront a measles surge

CASHTON - It was a busier-than-usual morning at Lisa Larson's mobile health care clinic, with five patients passing through the repurposed Winnebago motorhome parked at an Amish produce market. Taking a break between appointments to call a nurse colleague, she heard about a patient who'd developed a rash on her ears and along her hairline. "I wonder if she's positive," Larson said. She didn't need to specify with what. Larson and her colleagues care for patients from southwestern Wisconsin's Amish communities. Amid Wisconsin's worst measles outbreak in decades, which has blown past 400 cases , health officials had until recently been tight-lipped for privacy reasons about who is getting sick. The state health department acknowledged in a Nov. 3 memo that disease transmission is primarily in Amish and Mennonite communities. Packers Foundation grant to help Fond du Lac clinic patients

FOND DU LAC – A $3,000 Green Bay Packers Foundation grant will help the SSM Health Samaritan Clinic provide clothing, hygiene supplies and other basic necessities to patients in need. The grant will support the clinic and Agnesian HealthCare Foundation's efforts to address social determinants of health, according to a community announcement. The money will be used to buy coats, hygiene supplies, T-shirts, sweatshirts and sweatpants for patients facing financial hardship. Oconto Falls City Council expresses concern over 2027 ambulance rates

OCONTO FALLS – The Oconto Falls City Council reopened their discussion on ambulance rates for 2027 at their meeting on Oct. 13. FOND DU LAC – Board-certified radiation oncologist Joel M. Schwartz has joined the SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic team. Schwartz graduated from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, New York, and completed a residency at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, New York, according to a community announcement. The physician specializes in treating prostate, lung, breast and skin cancers, as well as rare and uncommon malignancies. FOND DU LAC – An ophthalmologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of eye conditions has joined SSM Health Eye Care at 421 Camelot Drive. Dr. Darrell Kohli has joined the practice, according to a community announcement. Allouez Senior Living dealing with COVID-19 outbreak

(This story has been updated to add new information.) Allouez Senior Living , an assisted living facility, is dealing with an acute respiratory illness outbreak, identified as COVID-19, that has affected some of its elderly residents. After testing, the facility determined sick residents were infected with COVID-19, according to an Oct. 19 email by facility staff obtained by the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The facility has ceased group activities. Staff were trying to isolate sick residents, the email said. The facility’s community relations director, Terri Jochmann, had first emailed relatives and guardians of residents on Oct. 18 that there was “a contagious disease outbreak” in the memory care building, designed specifically for those with serious impairments like Alzheimer’s or dementia. The facility's initial email did not specify the disease, the exact number of residents affected, or the cause of the outbreak. According to the Brown County Health & Human Services Department , the facility notified the health department of acute respiratory infections , a class of illness that includes the common cold, the flu, COVID-19, and RSV . SSM Health adds physiatrist at Fond du Lac clinic

FOND DU LAC – SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic has added board-certified physiatrist Trenton VandeWater, M.D., to its medical staff, expanding sports medicine and rehabilitation services for patients with musculoskeletal and nerve-related conditions, according to a community announcement. VandeWater will see patients at Health Plaza A in Fond du Lac. The physician specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation with a focus on restoring function, reducing pain and helping patients maintain active lifestyles. The practice includes minimally invasive and non-operative treatments such as ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma injections, cryoneurolysis and percutaneous tenotomy. VandeWater earned a medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation there.
