EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — Texas has ranked first in the United States for ATV and UTV accidents since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Nationwide.com .

The insurance company says sales and popularity of these vehicles have rised and so have the risks of serious injury or death.

The insurance company says more than 700 deaths and 100,000 injuries happen each year with ATVs and UTVS.

The insurance company also provides a list of safety rules for riders. Those are the following:

    • Always wear a Department of Transportation (DOT)-compliant helmet along with goggles, long sleeves, long pants, gloves and over-the-ankle boots.
    • Avoid riding on paved roads when possible as ATVs are designed for off-road use only.
    • Do not ride your ATV under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
    • Do not carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV and don’t more than one passenger on a two-seater ATV.
