Jesse Munoz' career as a baseball coach reached another milestone Tuesday night.

The veteran coach won his 500th game as his Trailblazers defeated Eastwood 11-2 in a key District 1-6A matchup that left Americas at 11-2 and alone in first place with three regular season games remaining.

"The players deserve credit," said Munoz, who is in his 18th year at Americas and who previously worked at San Elizario and Burges. "I don't hit a ball or throw a ball or catch a ball. We've built a strong culture here and my assistants and the players put in so much work to be successful."

Americas is in its final year in Class 6A before moving down to Class 5A in the latest UIL realignment. Even after losing several starters from last year's regional quarterfinalist team, AHS has had a solid year.

"The kids believe in themselves," Munoz said. "They have been consistent."

    Tuesday's standouts

    • Isaac Arrieta was the winning pitcher, going seven innings and allowing two third inning runs.
    • LJ McDonald hit a two-run homer and had a double.
    • Leadoff batter Andres Suarez drove in a run with a double and scored twice.
    • Andres Lopez reached base three times and drove in a run.

    Quoting the winning pitcher

"Coach Munoz deserves this," Arrieta said. "He's a great coach and has a passion for what he does. Our team has been motivated all season and we want to continue our tradition of winning."

    Championship household

Munoz isn't the only one who was celebrating Tuesday. His daughter Trinity is a key member of the Montwood HS softball team, which is the regular season champion in District 1-6A.
