Western Hires Young as New President
ROCK SPRINGS — The Western Wyoming Community College Board of Trustees hired Kirk Young to be the college’s next president after a unanimous vote Thursday evening. The board hosted a special meeting that started with a short executive session, which followed with the vote. Young’s first day will be July 1.
Sweetwater County votes to expand off-road vehicle access
ROCK SPRINGS — In a recent move prompted first by legislative changes, Sweetwater County Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution April 16 allowing out-of-state off-road vehicles to travel on county roads without a license. House Bill 42, passed in 2023, granted counties and cities the flexibility to allow out-of-town OHV users to acquire only a registration sticker instead of a full license, prompting the commissioners’ decision. BLM horses in upcoming McCullough Peaks sale now online
McCULLOUGH PEAKS, Wyo. — The BLM announced in a Facebook post Wednesday that mares that will be available for adoption in May are now viewable online. Following a Rock Springs adoption event taking place this weekend, the BLM will be hosting a virtual adoption event for horses from the McCullough Peaks herd management area from May 6 to May 13. The Online Corral event will only offer mares in this sale, with stallions from the area to become available at a later date, per the BLM.
Autopsy Scheduled for Body Found Thursday
ROCK SPRINGS – An autopsy on a body found in Rock Springs will take place tomorrow, though the cause of death is considered to be a result of natural causes. The body of a homeless man was discovered under the Hancock Bridge near Roosevelt Learning Center in Rock Springs Thursday morning. Elizabeth Coontz, the public information officer for the RSPD said the body was sent to Colorado for an autopsy. She also said the RSPD will not release the man’s name.
Local Man to Receive Carnegie Medal for Heroism
CHEYENNE – A local hero is the recipient of the Carnegie Medal for saving a mother and her son from a burning home outside of Green River two years ago. Ryan Pasborg will receive the medal Saturday at 5 p.m. from Gov. Mark Gordon at the Wyoming Governor’s Residence. Pasborg rescued a mother and her four-year-old son from a burning home Feb. 2, 2022, after smelling smoke and seeing flames during his drive to work.
