EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) —  A nine-year-old boy who suffered major injuries after being hit by a pickup truck in El Cajon last month has died, according to county officials.

Ashton Burris was identified as the child killed in the crash, the County of San Diego confirmed to FOX 5/KUSI on Thursday. He died several days after the collision, on April 19, officials said.

The collision occurred on the evening of April 14 on northbound Rios Canyon Road near Kelli Lane.

Suspect sought in Oceanside murder case; reward being offered

The boy was attempting to cross Rios Canyon Road as a 76-year-old man driving a 1991 GMC Sierra was traveling northbound, according to California Highway Patrol. The driver of the vehicle was unable to avoid the child and crashed into him.

Burris was taken to the hospital with major injuries, while the driver stayed at the scene, per law enforcement.

A GoFundMe has been set up for the family of the victim.

CHP confirmed driving under the influence was not a factor in the crash.
