The Story Starts in the Field: Inside Loveland’s Root Shoot Malting
Every great pint and every pour of whiskey starts somewhere. For a growing number of Colorado brewers and distillers, that somewhere is a family farm in Loveland. Root Shoot Malting grows its own barley, wheat, rye and corn at Olander Farms, then turns that grain into award-winning craft malt in a malthouse right on the property. The Olander family has farmed in Loveland for five generations, and in 2016, Todd Olander launched Root Shoot to keep the farm’s grain connected to the people who brew and distill with it. Today, that malt finds its way into beer and spirits across Colorado and beyond, including the family’s own Root Shoot Spirits, whose American Single Malt Whiskey was named Spirit of the Year at the 2026 London Spirits Competition.

Power generating facility, data center UDC amendments postponed at Planning Commission
CHEYENNE — Members of the city’s Planning Commission postponed consideration of two proposed Unified Development Code (UDC) amendments Monday that would establish new regulations for power generation facilities and data centers. The reason for the postponements, commissioners said, is the complexity of the proposals. They requested additional information from utility providers, further discussion of noise and water regulations, and consideration of how different sizes of data centers and power generation facilities should be treated under city zoning rules. Power generating facilities The commission postponed the proposed power generation facilities text amendment item until its Nov. 2 meeting. The proposal was previously postponed Sept. 8 due to concerns about potential loopholes involving small-scale power generation, environmental impacts and the possibility of multiple facilities being combined to avoid regulations. Under the revised proposal, the city would consolidate power generation separately. Community power generation would be exempt from certain review requirements if it is no larger than 2.5 megawatts and does not produce discernible noise or primary pollutants. The amendment would also establish rules for emergency backup generators, including allowing them to operate for up to 144 hours during an emergency. Commissioner Boyd Wiggam questioned whether that time limit would be sufficient during

Cheyenne City Council advances Orchard Hills data center items ahead of final vote
CHEYENNE — Industrial development took center stage at a Cheyenne City Council meeting Monday evening with nine items related to two confirmed data center development projects on the agenda. One of these is the Orchard Hills data center project proposed to be located west of South Greeley Highway, south of West College Drive, and southwest of and adjacent to the intersection of Apple Street and York Avenue. It is adjacent to the existing Meta data center campus. Members of the council advanced plans for the proposed 162-acre data center development in south Cheyenne, approving its annexation and two zoning measures on second reading despite ongoing objections from residents in the area, and the city’s Planning Commission’s previous denial of the project. The data center campus is being developed by Dallas-based Trammell Crow Company. The council approved an item annexing the land, and then subsequently rezoned the property to agricultural zoning. A separate ordinance changed the Orchard Hills property from agricultural to light industrial zoning. The council also voted to overrule the Planning Commission’s unanimous denial of a related future land-use map. A separate resolution changing the property’s future land-use designation from mixed-use residential to mixed-use employment was postponed until Oct.
