EDWARDSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Downstream from Toby Creek, rust-colored water is flowing in a creek in Edwardsville behind Market 32 grocery store.

“Even normal rain it’s a different color,” said Edwardsville resident Matthew Scott-Amos.

About three miles downstream from Sunday’s mine subsidence in Toby Creek in Luzerne , rust-colored water can now be seen in Edwardsville on that same creek.

“I’ve never seen the orange color before, first time we’ve seen it and I know this is part of Toby Creek,” said Thomas Jenkins of Edwardsville.

Toby Creek eventually flows underground in pringle and resurfaces at this levee before flowing into the Susquehanna River.

“The water on that side of the cement wall is coming out kind of an orange-brown and something we don’t we’ve not seen before, and the other water is flowing across it. It looks like it’s blending in,” said Edwardsville resident Anne Jenkins.

People in the area believe the cause of this new color could be from the mine subsidence in Luzerne.

“I am not sure where it comes from, but I guess it’s from the mine,” Thomas said.

Not only is it orange, but the people who walk along Toby Creek in Edwardsville said the water level is lower too.

“And there’s area exposed in this area over here that were not here the other day as well as this small creek behind me here this is down as well,” Thomas continued.

28/22 News contacted officials at the Department of Environmental Protection for comment, but they weren’t initially aware of the orange water in the area.
