HASHIM COATES: Aurora has a troubling relationship with democracy
Something is fundamentally wrong with a government spending more energy controlling the voices of its residents than addressing the injustices they speak about. Yet this has become an increasingly disturbing pattern in Aurora, where public participation appears welcome only when it doesn’t challenge the comfort or authority of those holding power.

Colorado man turns videotapes of his grandfather into new podcast about his family’s flight from Nazis during WWII
Jeremy Gendelman sat his paternal grandfather down at their family’s Denver kitchen table in 2008, a camcorder trained on him, and asked a single question. “Where were you born?” Yakov “Yasha” Gendelman didn’t stop talking for three hours. “I was born in 1930 in the Soviet Union,” Yasha began. “My childhood was not the best.” Those words, captured on early-aughts videotape, became the introductory lines in Gendelman’s podcast “Yasha,” which launched in September with a five-episode first season that can be found wherever you get your podcasts and has since been spotlighted by Apple Podcasts as a show worth catching. Podcast episodes have been streamed or downloaded more than 24,000 times, Gendelman said. The story details Yasha’s childhood “caught between Hitler’s advancing forces and Stalin’s iron rule,” as Gendelman fused his grandfather’s extensive memories with his own historical research. Yasha died in 2019 at the age of 90, but the story of his childhood flight across the Soviet Union during the Nazi invasion of World War II is now preserved — an endeavor that began as a labor of love and evolved into a creative passion once Jeremy Gendelman fell in love with the audio storytelling format. “At first, it

Opinion: Denver not too broke to help the homeless; desert city Phoenix saves for rainy day
When articles appear reporting Denver’s expenditures on homeless services, the comments often are filled with allegations that Denver is “broke” and the “liberals” (usually a much more demeaning word is used) shouldn’t be helping them.

Denver Congressional Race Splits Jewish Voters Over Kiros' Israel Stance
Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist attorney, pulled off one of the biggest upsets in recent Colorado politics when she defeated 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in the June Democratic primary for the state's 1st Congressional District. But in the months since, her positions on Israel and her refusal to call last year's Boulder firebombing an antisemitic attack have turned her once-celebratory primary win into a bitter general-election fight over Zionism itself.
