NEWS BRIEFS: Voters continue Spokane Transit tax
Voters within Spokane Transit Authority’s public transportation benefit area approved the renewal of a 0.2% sales tax to maintain and enhance public bus service. The special taxing district includes the cities of Spokane, Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, Millwood, Medical Lake, Cheney and Airway Heights, as well as some unincorporated portions of the county near city limits. The STA measure was passing by 51.6% as of the Aug. 10 ballot tally. The 0.2% tax was first approved in 2016 with a planned sunset at the end of 2028. Developer-backed opponents to the tax renewal had criticized how much STA has in reserves (the agency expects to end this year more than $128 million in the black, on top of nearly $76 million in budgeted reserves). Proponents and the agency, however, said the renewal was necessary to maintain services that have expanded by about 35% over the last decade and to work toward major projects such as a rapid transit line on Division Street. “This election result shows how valuable Spokane Transit Authority is for our region and its residents,” Erik Lowe & Sarah Rose, co-executive directors of pro-transit organization Spokane Reimagined, said in an emailed statement. “We’re immensely grateful to the community for recognizing the importance of STA in connecting all of us to opportunity.” (SAMANTHA WOHLFEIL)

An Instructive Win for Transit in Spokane
In many US cities, voters will soon be asked to invest in public transit, if only to sustain services as operating costs rise. So it might be useful to look closely at the just-completed battle in a very “purple” place, i.e. a place with plenty of Democrats but also lots of Republicans. What’s interesting is the specific arguments that the opposition made. You can expect these arguments when this issue comes up in your community. This post provides some responses to them.
