Mandatory water restrictions underway for Edinburg residents

EDINBURG, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — Edinburg residents will now be required to minimize their outdoor water usage due to drought conditions in the area, according to city officials.

“Several factors, including a lack of rainfall, Mexico’s scarce delivery of water under the terms of a 1944 treaty and the combined water level at the Falcon and Amistad Dams require that mandatory compliance begin,” the City of Edinburg announced.

The city is enforcing residents to limit outdoor watering hours to designated days based on address number.

Addresses with odd numbers will be able to water on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and even address numbers will be able to water on Thursdays and Sundays, according to the city.

Outdoor watering hours will be from midnight to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.

Between 6 p.m. and 11:59 p.m., vehicles, trailers, boats, airplanes, and other mobile equipment will need to be washed using a handheld hose and bucket.

The city classifies the following as water waste:
– Allowing water to run off into a gutter ditch or drain
– Failure to repair a controllable leak
– Washing sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, tennis courts, patios, or other paved areas

The only exception to outdoor watering is to reduce immediate fire hazards.

“Water for non-essential purposes is restricted,” the city said.

Edinburg residents will still be able to use water inside their homes as usual.

The City of Edinburg will enter a Stage 2 Water Conservation efforts and begin enforcing mandatory compliance on Monday, May 6.
