    Sports roundup: Aces no-hit Gates in softball, beat Hertford in baseball

    The John A. Holmes Aces no-hit the Gates County Red Barons on Thursday, April 28, in a 10-0 non-conference win.

    Mia Hoffer pitched six innings of no-hit ball, giving up only one walk while striking out eight Red Baron hitters.

    Holmes scored one run in the second, three in the third, three in the fourth and three in sixth.

    Ellie Spear led the Aces’ eight-hit attack, collecting two. She also knocked in a run and scored three times.

    Marley Harrell also had two hits, knocked in a run and scored two runs. Chloe Chappell also had a couple of hits, including a double, and scored two runs. Harper Evans also had a double and scored a run. Morgan Nixon had a run batted in.

    Baseball

    Holmes 6, Hertford County 2

    The John A. Holmes Aces baseball team defeated conference foe Hertford County on Thursday 6-2.

    The Aces scored two runs in the third, and then one each in the last four innings of the seven-inning game. The Bears scored their two runs in the final frame.

    Bycen Newsome had two of the Aces’ five hits. Daniel Hare, Maddox Bass and Myles Cobb had the other three. Cobb and Newsome each drove in a run.

    Darius Oliver went five innings, giving up only one hit. He also walked four batters and struck out seven. Cobb pitched two innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits. He struck out three Bear hitters.

    Soccer

    Holmes 1, Camden 1

    John A. Holmes High School and Camden County High School played two overtime periods Monday but still ended their soccer match tied 1-1.

    Courtney Forbes scored the goal for Camden in the second half. Holmes scored its goal in the first half.

    Bruins goalkeeper Maria Lasher had 11 saves on 12 shots on goal.

    Bear Grass Charter 5, Holmes 3

    The John A. Holmes High School Aces lost a non-conference soccer game to Bear Grass Charter on Friday, May 3, 5-3.

    The Bears of Bear Grass scored two goals in the first half and three in the second. The Holmes Aces scored all three of their goals in the second half.

    Emma Parrish scored two goals on five shots on goal. She also had an assist. L. Carpiette scored one goal on two shots on goal. Ellie Spear and Janaya Perry had the other two assists.

    Aces’ goalkeeper Ava Bunch recorded 11 saves on 16 Bear Grass shots on goal.
