Several hospitals from Northwest Indiana earned an “A” grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group.

The national nonprofit watchdog organization rates hospitals nationwide based on 30 metrics, including errors, accidents, injuries, infections and prevention. Almost 3,000 hospitals are graded.

Three Northwest Indiana hospitals were given an “A” rating, including Northwest Health – Porter in Valparaiso; St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago; and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.

“Patients’ health, well-being and safety are our No. 1 priorities,” said Donald Fesko, CEO of Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, parent company of Community Healthcare System, in a press release. “St. Catherine Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center earning Leapfrog’s highest grade possible is a testament to the dedication of our staff to provide the safest experience for those who trust us with their care.”

Leapfrog's safety grades are peer reviewed and free to the public. They are updated twice a year.
