Smith STEAM Academy was to provide as many as 500 Denver students with an education modeled after historically Black colleges . But five years after opening, the school has just 24 students and is set to close at the end of this school year. Denver Public Schools Superintendent Alex Marrero is recommending an operational closure, according to letters sent to families and staff this week. Denver schools are funded per student, and an operational closure is when a school’s enrollment is so low that it’s financially unsustainable. Unlike most school closures, operational closures do not require approval from the elected school board, a district spokesperson said. Chelsey Moore’s son is a senior at Robert F. Smith. He enrolled there after the school board voted to close his previous school , the Denver School of Innovation and Sustainable Design, because of low enrollment. Moore said her son, who is not a student of color, found a “magical … standalone safe

Mead ends Colorado 3A No. 2 Timnath's unbeaten run with emphatic win
The dream of a perfect season for Timnath football is officially over. Mead made sure of that in emphatic fashion with a dominant 28-7 road win over the Cubs on Oct. 15 at PSD Stadium. A scoreless game through the first 20 minutes turned into a Mavericks romp and some postgame stomping in celebration on the Timnath turf. And why not? The visitors earned a hearty celebration, knocking off one of the last four unbeatens in Colorado Class 3A and the classification's second-ranked team. "They’re a tough team and have been for many years. They do a really good job down there and played a great game tonight," Timnath coach Jayson Robinson told the Coloradoan. Mead (6-2, 3-1 league) opened it up late in the first half, getting a 38-yard rushing score from Caleb Fahlin to open the scoring and then a Joseph Klatt 37-yard passing touchdown to Cooper Modrzejewski. Klatt threw for three TDs, adding another scoring toss to Brennar Stapp in the second half. That aerial success was somewhat surprising. The Mavericks tend to be a physical, run-oriented team that came in averaging only 105 passing yards per game. No. 2 Timnath (7-1, 3-1 league) had also fielded

Facing an enrollment drop, Denver superintendent says school closures could be coming

Keep Chalkbeat’s valuable education coverage at the top of your feeds by clicking here and checking the box next to our name. Denver Public Schools’ enrollment fell by 1,780 students this fall, new data shows . The decline was steeper than district officials were expecting, and Superintendent Alex Marrero implied that more school closures could be coming soon. Marrero said at a school board meeting Thursday that he anticipates he’ll have to act on a clause in the board’s four-year moratorium on school closures that allows exceptions if there is a “substantial shift” in enrollment, funding, or another emergency. Marrero didn’t make clear when he might recommend more school closures. The board’s policy calls for closure recommendations to happen no later than November of the preceding school year. Given the tight timeline, a district spokesperson said it’s not possible for the board to vote to close a school this year, though Marrero could enact what he calls “operational shifts.” This year, DPS cut ninth grade from Robert F. Smith STEAM Academy after fewer than 20 students enrolled in that grade, a district spokesperson said. The high
