Cedar Rapids Kennedy overcomes Linn-Mar, 21-17, with some controversy
CEDAR RAPIDS - Brian White is the most successful coach in Cedar Rapids Kennedy football history. He officially got that moniker Friday night when his Cougars beat Linn-Mar at Kingston Stadium. This was a gutsy record-breaking win for his guys without question. One over his alma mater, by the way. It was a late comeback win. A rebound win considering last week. And sort of a controversial one. Paul Kaump’s 1-yard touchdown off a wildcat formation with 1:43 left provided the go-ahead points and Kennedy held on for a 21-17 victory. “What a high school football game,” White said. “That was a helluva game. We knew they were a good team. They play a murder schedule, too. They’re 0-4, and they could easily be 4-0. They are a good football team.” And an absolutely snakebit team. Linn-Mar dropped to 0-4. It has losses this season of two points, three points and now four. The Lions took a 17-14 lead on running back Hud Turner’s brilliant 56-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter. They turned Kennedy (2-2) over on downs at their 11 with 5:13 left, then thought they had done so again at their 14 with under two minutes

Cedar Rapids schools could start their day at a different time next year
CEDAR RAPIDS — Possible new start times for the school day and changes to busing routes are being considered as the Cedar Rapids school district prepares to close schools and restructure grade levels. The Cedar Rapids school board Monday was presented with decision-making criteria that will guide the creation of several proposals for how the district could change its start times and transportation routes. Changes to the bell schedule are being considered as district leaders prepare for a reconfiguration of the district’s K-8 schools for the 2027-28 school year. This includes the closure of five elementary schools and a change to a fifth and sixth grade intermediate model. Families will get the opportunity to weigh any proposed changes before a decision is made as district leaders continue to stress intentional community engagement and transparency in making decisions. The school board anticipates making a decision Dec. 14. “How we reach a decision matters just as much as the decision itself,” Superintendent Tawana Lannin said. “The board asked us to establish clear expectations, build meaningful feedback loops, engage stakeholders early and demonstrate how the information we gather helps shape our decisions.” The criteria was created by the Strategic Plan Executive Committee, a

Linn-Mar High School to hit near-capacity even as district enrollment shrinks
MARION — Linn-Mar High School will be near capacity next year even as enrollment is projected to steadily decline across the district, mirroring statewide trends. When Linn-Mar Community School District’s largest class — who are currently eighth graders — moves up through Linn-Mar High School, the building will reach 98% capacity, according to an analysis by RSP & Associates. But this growth at the high school will be temporary. The district is graduating more students each year than are enrolling in kindergarten and is projected to decline by 400 students over the next five years for a total enrollment of around 7,000. This could mean a significant loss of revenue for the district since Iowa schools are funded on a per pupil formula. These projections are more optimistic than projections by the Iowa Department of Education, which estimates the Linn-Mar district to have a certified enrollment of 6,867 by the 2030-31 school year. The Linn-Mar school board Monday was presented the enrollment analysis by RSP & Associates, a leader in school planning that has worked with dozens of Iowa school districts to analyze enrollment trends and attendance boundaries so school leaders can make data-driven decisions. The Linn-Mar district has worked

The Saints improved to 3-0 and won their 16th straight game. The Clippers (2-1) actually outplayed Xavier for the better part of three quarters. Xavier finally found some rhythm on offense in the third. Cash Parks hit Dusty Cook on a screen to the left sideline and he scampered 30 yards for the touchdown, cutting the deficit to 17-14 with 1:58 left in the frame. Xavier’s defense got consecutive stops deep in CCA territory and forced punts, leading to good field position. CCA threatened to pull within a score but the Saints defense, who hurt itself with penalties, managed to hold and cause a missed field goal with 4:24
