Former Louisiana legislator James David Cain died Wednesday night in his Dry Creek home after battling Alzheimer’s disease.

His son, federal judge James David Cain Jr.,and his two daughters were by his side, Gov. Jeff Landry said in a statement.

“Few Louisiana legislators have left such an indelible mark on our state’s political history,” Landry said. “Senator Cain served in the House for several terms before being elected to the Senate where he served until his retirement.

”His love for his constituents was remarkable and he would fight tirelessly for their needs,” Landry said. “His warm sense of humor and his pragmatic approach to politics made him colorful and beloved.”

Cain served 20 years in the Louisiana House of Representatives and another 16 in the Senate, where he led the Insurance and Agriculture & Natural Resources committees.

Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple said Cain will be “deeply missed.”

“He dedicated his life to public service and helped shape our state’s political landscape,” Temple said. “As someone who had the pleasure of knowing Senator Cain since my childhood, there is no better example of consummate leadership and tireless advocacy for the people of Louisiana.”
