A councilman from Dover has been called to step down after allegedly harassing a group of homeless men.

Councilman Sergio Rodriguez, who was arrested back in February for allegedly harassing the group of men, is now being called on to resign by his own party.

Rodriguez posted a video of the incident on Facebook on Feb. 7. Police say he got into an argument with the men and kicked one of them, causing a hand injury. However, Rodriguez claims that's not the full story. He says the three men were openly drinking alcohol on the street and he was concerned for the safety of residents.

A statement from Morris County Young Democrats alleges that in a recent town council meeting, Rodriguez defended his actions and now they feel it is time for him to resign.

Rodriguez’s attorney Joseph Scura provided a statement to News 12:

“Councilman Rodriguez would love the opportunity to address the allegations, but out of respect for the legal process he is going to do that in court. It is our belief that when all is said and done, these allegations will be proven to be nothing more than political gamesmanship at the expense of the residents of Dover.”
