DOBSON — Those curious about the value of antique jewelry or artwork they own have a chance to find that out at an upcoming event planned by a local historical group, which last year featured an item worth thousands.

While this might resemble the format of the popular “Antiques Roadshow” television series on PBS, it actually will be part of Antiques on Parade, to be presented by the Surry County Historical Society later this month.

Each person attending that annual event on May 20 may bring one item for evaluation by regional antiques experts who’ll be there.

It is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Surry County Service Center at 915 E. Atkins St. in Dobson. The $15 cost will include dessert and beverage refreshments in addition to an antique appraisal, with reservations required by a May 13 deadline.

In 2023, the Antiques on Parade program produced some interesting objects, according to Dr. Annette Ayers, president of the Surry Historical Society.

“The most valuable item was a painting valued at $27,000,” Ayers disclosed, brought by someone from Elkin. Other noteworthy objects on hand included a pearl necklace, a gold coin necklace and an ornamental Asian sword.

More than 50 people attended the event in 2023.

“This is one of our most popular programs,” Ayers said Thursday afternoon.

The appraisal program was launched by the historical group in 2015 and one never knows what might turn up in an atmosphere filled with anticipation and excitement, organizers said.

Some of the more unique offerings in the past have included a Native American fish trap, early mechanical toys, Mickey Mouse egg cups more than 80 years old and early daguerreotypes (photographs captured on sheets of copper).

The regional antique experts who will be providing the evaluations are Larry Laster of Laster’s Fine Art and Antiques in Winston-Salem; Todd Leinbach, Leinbach Realty and Auction, Clemmons; and Walter White of Dobson.

    Reservation details

Those interested in attending must send a check for the total number of people in their party, at the $15-per-person cost, and a note listing those individuals by name, by the May 13 deadline.

The mailing address for the check and notification is Surry County Historical Society, P.O. Box 469, Mount Airy, NC, 27030.

More information about the appraisal program is available at 336-325-2161, 336-756-8510, 336-374-8620 or 336-352-3429.

The proceeds from Surry County Antiques on Parade will support yearly events of the historical group, a non-profit organization with the purpose of promoting, collecting, educating and sharing the history and culture of the area.

This includes activities hosted at the 1799 Edwards-Franklin House that it owns.
