The Messengers Sunday School Class of the First United Methodist Church was organized in 1955, 69 years ago! Membership was full of fairly newly married couples and a few single persons. Sadly most of those original members are no longer alive, but their memories and good works outlive them. Jackie Brice is one of the originals who still attends on Sunday with a big smile on her face! Dan Bonner, Judge Kearney Brim, and Christine Payne (Mrs. Earl) were a few of the early memorable teachers. As time passed new couples and singles joined the class to give freely of their time, talents and financial resources for the many First United Methodist projects and programs.

DWI Arrest Made After Hit-and-Run Crash in Sulphur Springs
On Monday, February 19th, Sulphur Springs Police Officers responded to a crash at the intersection of Gilmer and Hinnant. Following the incident, 62-year-old Martin Joseph Yosten reportedly fled the scene. However, officers conducted an investigative stop on his Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Upon approaching the driver (Yosten), officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the individual's breath. Further inspection revealed an open container inside the vehicle, and Yosten admitted to consuming alcohol.

The National Weather Service presents a free Severe Weather Education Class in Hopkins County on Tuesday, February 27, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Sulphur Springs City Hall. The City of Sulphur Springs is partnering with the National Weather Service’s SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training Class. The program highlights severe weather safety and how you can report robust weather information. Rockwall Man Faces Hopkins County Fentanyl Murder Charge
Hopkins County Deputies transported 43-year-old Tyler Bromley of Rockwall to the Hopkins County Jail, where they booked him on a murder charge. They are accusing Bromley of delivering drugs laced with fentanyl to a Hopkins County woman who died of an overdose. A new Texas law signed in September allows charging a person with murder if they supply fentanyl that results in a death.

Texas High School Student Dies After Fishing Tournament Weigh-In
Sad news from this past weekend as a Texas high school student died after participating in a weekend fishing tournament. Kale Robinson, a junior at Winnsboro High School in northeast Texas, passed out at the weigh-in for the Texas High School Bass Association's Lake Bob Sandlin/Lake Springs tournament on Saturday, February 17, 2024.
Sulphur Springs Shoplifting Arrest Leads To Additional Charges
Sulphur Springs Police responded to a local retailer after asset protection officers detained 40-year-old Mitchelle Remon Williamson of Quitman for allegedly shoplifting nearly $170 of merchandise. During a search by officers, he had a handgun. A subsequent search during booking turned up a clear plastic baggie containing methamphetamine and 28 debit, credit, and ID cards belonging to other people. In addition to the shoplifting, Williamson now faces multiple charges.

Missouri prosecutors said Tuesday that they charged two adults with murder in last week’s mass shooting that killed one person and injured 22 others. It was near the end of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade. Lyndell Mays, of Raytown, Missouri, and Dominic Miller, of Kansas City, Missouri, are both charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. They were strangers who pulled out guns and began firing within seconds of starting an argument. They were both hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
