DICKINSON, N.D. — The Dickinson Midgets have been a mainstay amongst the top of the WDA this season on the diamond. The Midgets currently sit in second in the conference with a 10-4 record, and are 17-7 overall. With their success this year, has come a major milestone for one of their own.

Head coach Pete Dobitz reached 500 career wins in Dickinson’s victory over Williston on April 26. The longtime Dickinson head coach doesn’t consider this a milestone for just himself, but his entire coaching staff, saying that they’re the ones that help build the program through their work with the younger players.

“500 wins is a coaching staff,” Dobitz says. “I go all the way back to Jim Statler being my assistant coach for 20-plus years and now I’ve had Steven Greenwood, Mason Schiff, Karson Backer. I mean, I’ve just had a lot of good gentlemen that have been assistant coaches for me. They always say all Dickinson ever does is reload every year. Well, sometimes sometimes it’s not that easy. but they do a great job of bringing up boys that are ready to compete at the varsity level.”

For the players on this year’s team, most of them have grown up with coach Dobitz. They emphasize how special it is to not only see him reach this milestone, but to be a part of his career.

“I’ve been playing under him for a few years now, and he’s just a great coach, a great guy,” senior Jace Kovash says. “For him to get that market is remarkable and I’m proud to be part of it really special.”

“I played with him when I was in Babe Ruth and now up at the high school level,” senior Jeremiah Jilek adds. “I’ve gotten to know him really well. He’s been one of my favorite coaches since being a three sport athlete. He’s one of my favorites. He knows what he’s doing and it shows us how many wins he’s gotten.”
