Timber theft probe in Louisiana leads to drug, hunting arrests

(The Center Square) – A timber theft investigation in Rapides Parish led authorities to a truck carrying a dead deer during a nighttime hunting operation, resulting in four arrests and the seizure of six firearms and suspected methamphetamine. The operation grew out of a Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry investigation into suspected timber theft and property damage. Wildlife agents joined the investigation to address suspected nighttime hunting violations. Investigators were conducting surveillance in the Lena area Oct. 24 when they saw people hunting from a moving vehicle at night, according to a Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries news release issued Monday. A traffic stop turned up an antlerless deer in the truck bed as well as methamphetamines and firearms. Edward L. Randall, 67, and Regina G. Randall, 62, both of Lena, were arrested on allegations of timber theft, property damage, trespassing and multiple deer hunting violations. Those included hunting during illegal hours, hunting from a moving vehicle and hunting without required licenses and tags. Regina Randall also faces allegations of possessing methamphetamine and possessing a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Jessica D. Morehead, 40, and Shawn P. Rapides cases: Alexandria man pleads guilty to manslaughter in stabbing

An Alexandria man pleaded guilty on Wednesday to manslaughter in the February stabbing death of another man. Michael Steven Hargrove, 44, will be sentenced in the death of Calvin Lee Jr. on Dec. 16, according to online Rapides Parish Clerk of Court records. The Alexandria Police Department responded to a call about a stabbing early on Feb. 19 in the 700 block of Bolton Avenue, and officers found Lee, 37, wounded. He was taken to a hospital, but later died. Hargrove initially was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder. He was indicted in late June on a felony charge of manslaughter by a Rapides Parish grand jury. On Wednesday, Hargrove appeared before 9th Judicial District Court Judge David Michael Williams for a pretrial conference. He withdrew his not guilty plea and entered a guilty plea, and Williams ordered a pre-sentencing investigation to be completed in two weeks. Alexandria mayor's race heads to runoff; 2 School Board members lose

Alexandria Mayor Jacques Roy will face District 1 Councilman Malcolm Larvadain in a runoff after none of the three candidates secured a majority on on Tuesday. And, in Boyce, voters elected a new police chief while at the same time approving a proposition that will allow the aldermen and mayor to appoint one instead. Roy was the top vote getter in the three-man race, receiving 49% of the votes. Larvadain was second with 41%, while Lorenzo Davis received 10%. Unofficial turnout in the race was only 46%, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State's office. All results are complete, but unofficial, until verified. Two Rapides Parish School Board members lost their seats, too. District H member George Johnson and District F member Marie Ashmore were defeated by Greg Hackney and Roosevelt Johnson, respectively. Alexandria City Marshal Jerome Hopewell bested two challengers to win re-election with 51% of the vote. Cedric Green received 41% of the votes, while Raymond Eli Smith got 7%. In Glenmora, the mayoral race was decided by just three votes. Jeffrey Botson won the contest with 255 votes, compared to 252 votes for Garry Goynes.
