A Michigan physical education teacher is expressing gratitude towards two students who saved his life after he went into cardiac arrest.

On March 22, during a student-teacher basketball game at Oak Park High School in Detroit, coach and P.E. teacher Alfred Kattola began to feel unwell before collapsing in the gym. He had suffered cardiac arrest, and after he collapsed, two students, Isreal DuBose and Correy Coleman, immediately stepped in to perform life-saving CPR. “We were sitting in the bleachers… I just knew I had to do something, I began compressions, and after two and a half rounds, the AED was brought in, and Correy placed the AED pads,” DuBose,17, explained to FOX News.

The two juniors had learned CPR and first aid a few months prior during a health class at Oakland Schools Technical Campus. Their instructor, a registered nurse, Angie Shaw, expressed her pride in their swift response. DuBose successfully restored Kattola’s heartbeat using the AED, and paramedics arrived soon after and transported Kattola to a local hospital. He returned to school the following week. He later reunited with Dubose and Coleman to express his gratitude and said both students aspire to pursue careers in the medical field.

He also pledged to support the students’ journey toward college. “You’ve always been strong-minded… some kids just talk, and you put that into effect. And I know the rest of your life it’s going to be that way. Keep that confidence and don’t let anybody question you. If you’ve got a backbone like that and you’ve got skill to back it up, nobody can stop you. I love you. Thank you so much,” he said to the pair.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 356,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals each year in the United States. Immediate CPR can significantly improve survival chances until medical assistance arrives. Common symptoms of cardiac arrest include sudden collapse, no pulse, no breathing, and loss of consciousness. Warning signs like chest discomfort, shortness of breath, weakness, and heart palpitations should not be ignored.
