URBANA — Finally for Urbana boys lacrosse, the quick strikes came. The Hawks had played nearly the entire game in the offensive zone, but goals were less frequent than coach Gavin Donahue would have liked due to poor shots and a series of nice saves by Montgomery Blair goalie Trenton Royall.

Each passing game seems to birth a new key contributor for Urbana baseball. Enter Aiden Welch, the sophomore second baseman who has found a home at the top of the lineup in his first full season of varsity ball. He stepped to the plate Thursday in a tie game in the bottom of the seventh inning, the winning run and a ticket to the state tournament 90 feet away.
Baseball Recap: Oakdale picks up fourth straight win at home
Oakdale had already won ten in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 3.5 runs), and they went ahead and made it 11 on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Washburn Pirates as they made off with a 12-1 victory. Oakdale's win was all the more impressive since Washburn was averaging only 3.68 runs allowed on the season.

Severna Park’s girls lacrosse team’s state quarterfinal tussle with Linganore on Wednesday featured a little bit of everything: a frenetic first quarter, a one-sided second quarter, eight yellow cards, both teams forced to play a player light for the much of the second half, a star player’s disqualification, both teams employing stall tactics at various times, and one team failing to score in the second half.
