    DMPD identify motorcyclist killed in a crash on Friday

    DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police identified 26-year-old Nicholas Edward Perez, a Des Moines resident, as the man who passed away from critical injuries in a crash involving a motorcycle.

    On May 3, 2024 at 8:15 p.m., officers with DMPD responded to SW 9th Street and Payton Avenue to investigate a report of a crash with injuries. Multiple 911 callers reporting that a smaller SUV and a motorcycle had collided in the intersection.

    First responders initiated lifesaving measures when they arrived to the seen and found Perez with critical injuries. Perez later died at the hospital. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

    The driver of the SUV was a 21-year-old female and also from Des Moines. She was driving a 2017 GMC Acadia.

    Des Moines police said that potential contributing factors to the fatal crash are excessive speed and failure to yield, those are being investigated further.

    This is the city’s fifth traffic-related fatality of the year, and the fourth involving a motorcycle.
