The end of April and the first few days of May have seen severe storms and heavy rainfall across Iowa.

A majority of the state saw some rainfall on Thursday with central Iowa getting as much as an inch of rain. Southern Iowa saw the most precipitation accumulating more than 2 inches of rain.

Des Moines' total rainfall for Thursday amounted to 0.55 inches.

Meanwhile, Ames nearly had an inch of rain totaling 0.97 inches. The storms over the last month helped lift roughly half of the state out of drought .

Des Moines has seen 7.86 inches of precipitation since Jan. 1. That's 1.09 inches behind the normal of 8.95 inches, according to the National Weather Service . Des Moines has had slightly more rain than this time last year. So far in 2024, the capital city has had 7.86 inches of precipitation compared to 7.52 inches last year.

Friday evening has an 80% chance of rain, which could move into Saturday morning. Thunderstorms are expected before 7 a.m. and could last unit 1 p.m. Saturday. Sunday could catch a break from the rain. It is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of 69 degrees, according to the National Weather Service .
