Denver's homelessness crisis has become among the worst in the nation despite the city spending millions of dollars on the problem.

The Denver Gazette's Chris Osher and Jenny Deam led a months-long investigation into the issue that found the city's focus on temporary shelter resulted in a very low number of Denver's homeless ever making it into permanent housing. Essentially, the city is sustaining the problem rather than solving it.

City Cast Denver host Bree Davis this week sat down with Osher and Deam to discuss why Denver is lagging behind other major metro areas when it comes to getting the homeless transitioned into permanent housing.

Osher, who recently won a prestigious Polk award for his reporting on Colorado's family court system, helped break down Denver's numbers as they examined the effectiveness of various programs.

Deam, who was recently honored by the Headliner Awards for her reporting on Colorado's troubled assisted-living care, offered heartbreaking details of the human toll of Denver's homelessness crisis.
