Denver Broncos cut ties with one of their quarterbacks

The Denver Broncos are one quarterback lighter after releasing Ben DiNucci on Wednesday. He was with the team last season after being brought over from the XFL.

The move comes just ahead of the start of rookie mini-camp and more than anything, seems to pave the way for John Matocha, the Colorado School of Mines quarterback who will be getting a tryout at the mini-camp.

DiNucci was one of four quarterbacks on the roster after the Broncos drafted Bo Nix in the first round and trading for Zach Wilson. Jarrett Stidham is still on the roster as well.

DiNucci was a seventh-round pick out of James Madison in 2020 of the Dallas Cowboys. He made one start for the team and spent two seasons there. He revived his career with the XFL's Seattle Sea Dragons in 2023 and that was enough for him to get noticed by the Broncos, ironically at the team's rookie mini-camp last year.

He spent the season on the practice squad and did not have much of a chance to make this year's team. This move, coming so early, gives him a chance to catch on somewhere else and gives the team a chance to take a look at Matocha, who threw for an NCAA record 162 touchdown passes. He won the Harlon Hill Trophy as the best player in Division II.
