DENVER ( KDVR ) — Your child may not need multivitamins after all, according to a new study released by U.S. News and World Report .

According to the study, multivitamins, coupled with a balanced diet, could be overdoing it and could lead to side effects such as headaches or nausea.

“Food is going to be better absorbed in the body,” Denver Health Dietician Molly Swanton said.  “I think the overarching message is that most kids don’t need a multivitamin if they’re eating a variety of foods.”

Experts said it’s important to talk with your child’s pediatrician about any health or nutrient deficiency concerns.

“Iron is a big one that we don’t really think about,” Swanton said. “Especially toddlers who are drinking a lot of milk, it doesn’t really absorb iron.”

Swanton said iron and vitamin D are among the most common nutrient deficiencies she sees.

“We do get part of our vitamin D from the sun, so I think it’s important to just get out and be outside as well,” Swanton said.
