Cardinal Newman's Open Division bid takes hit vs. Carrollwood Day

WEST PALM BEACH — Cardinal Newman football likely needed to make a statement in its regular season finale to stay in the Open Division conversation. Instead, the Crusaders sputtered on offense and couldn't get off the field on defense in a 28-14 loss to unbeaten Carrollwood Day on Friday, Oct. 30. "The same way we got down 20-0 [against Chaminade-Madonna], we battled back," Cardinal Newman coach Jack Daniels said. "Tonight we got down 14-0 and had chances to get off on the first couple drives and we just didn't do it." The loss comes at a bad time. Even with Carol City (No. 6) banned from the postseason, numerous programs are now in prime position to potentially leapfrog the Crusaders in MaxPreps' algorithm. Newman entered the night ranked No. 9 with the state's top eight teams qualifying for the Open Division. The defending Class 1A state champions will learn their fate on Nov. 6 after the upcoming "dead week." Even if they don't qualify for the Open Division, the Crusaders (6-3) will still have a chance to play for a state championship in Class 2A. Muffed-punt ruling costs Newman a touchdown Down 14-7 and punting, Newman's special teams saw an

JENSEN BEACH — The Jensen Beach High School football team chanted "Jensen County" in unison after the game while gathered on a wet and muddy field at the Birdcage.
