Miami library supporters to fight for funding amid Amendment 3 cuts
Miami-Dade libraries face big budget cuts after voters passed Amendment 3 — and now advocates are figuring out a path forward. Why it matters: Amendment 3 will deliver a tax break to homeowners but slash funding for local governments, including the Miami-Dade Public Library System, which is funded through a special taxing district. Threat level: Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library has warned that the amendment could lead to mass library closures and job cuts. Amendment 3 is expected to slash library funding by $21 million next year, or about 17% of their budget, according to county projections. That gap would increase to $38.7 million, or 31% of the budget, by 2028. The latest: The nonprofit plans to lobby state and county leaders, and work with partners to find long-term funding solutions. The group is also asking the community to chip in with donations, write letters of support and visit their local libraries to demonstrate the demand. What they're saying: Kristy Quiros, a board trustee and advocacy chair with Friends of the MDPL, tells Axios she hopes private donors "will rise to the occasion, but everybody is about to have their hand out because this is so much more far

Landmark InterContinental hotel in Miami was just sold. ‘Great real estate'
A landmark downtown Miami hotel best known for the neon Big Orange on New Year’s Eve and for hosting Super Bowl and college football teams has been sold to an investment firm that owns the plush Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne. Real estate development company Gencom said on Friday that it has purchased the InterContinental Miami, the waterfront 34-story hotel that stands where Biscayne Bay and the Miami River meet and at the southern flank of Bayfront Park. Gencom teamed up with Miami-based White Bridge Capital to buy the 652-room downtown landmark at 100 Chopin Plaza, a short walk to Brickell just to the south. In the other direction, it’s an easy stroll to Kaseya Center or the Pérez Art Museum. PortMiami is a short drive as is Wynwood and Midtown. Strategic Hotels & Resorts sold the hotel. The price wasn’t disclosed. Alessandro Colantonio, chief investment officer at Gencom, said in an interview with the Miami Herald on Friday that his company has no plans to make major changes to its newest hotel, which was built in 1982 as downtown was undergoing a renaissance. The number of rooms will stay the same, he said, and the InterContinental Miami will continue to be
