TAYLOR (WWJ) — Michigan State Police officials are reminding drivers to not get behind the wheel drunk after a Dearborn Heights woman was arrested for driving the wrong way on the freeway while drunk.

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, April 28, near Taylor. Police received multiple calls of a wrong-way driver who was headed east in the westbound lanes of westbound I-96 between Evergreen and Southfield.

Troopers who were dispatched to the area were then alerted a short time later that the woman was now headed south in the northbound lanes of I-75 near Clark. Callers told 911 dispatchers she was speeding the wrong way.

MDOT cameras picked up the vehicle as it was crossing the Rouge River Bridge and troopers spotted it as she passed Allen Road.

Troopers were able to get ahead of the woman’s vehicle and waited in a turnaround, MSP officials said.

As she passed a trooper, a PIT maneuver was used to stop the car.

The 23-year-old woman was arrested for impaired driving and held, pending prosecutor review.

MSP officials say the woman was not injured and no other crashes were reported as a result of her wrong-way driving.

“We were extremely fortunate that this driver did not hit another driver head on.” First Lt. Mike Shaw said on X, formerly Twitter. “Please remember do not get behind the wheel if you are impaired. There are way too many options available to get to your destination.”
