The Longest-Running Bar On Route 66 Is Famous For Its Clowns—And So Much More
My husband has a fear of clowns. It mostly stems from the painting his parents hung in his childhood bedroom featuring a vintage clown who looked like he might make you a balloon animal or he might murder you. But despite this lifelong phobia, my husband agreed to a spontaneous stop at the Circus Room, one of the longest running bars in Amarillo, Texas. In hindsight, he may have just wanted to escape the stifling Panhandle heat that seared our skin the minute we stepped outside our vehicle. But regardless of the motivation, he followed me up to the pale blue cinderblock building with a giant, spray-painted clown face surrounding the front door. Orange and yellow hair shot out from the clown's head like flames while his gaping, black mouth dared us to grab the door handle within it.
