The Dallas Cowboys have not been very active this offseason, as they signed just one free agent and saw many of their key players walk to other teams.

Many have been very critical of the Cowboys throughout that time, and Fox Sports analyst Chris Broussard is just the latest person to rip them a new one.

During a recent episode of FS1’s First Things First, Broussard gave Dallas an “F” grade for its offseason efforts thus far for all of the same reasons as everyone as.

This offseason has not been a good one for the Cowboys. That much is obvious.

However, the critics of Dallas are making it seem like it would be so easy for Jerry Jones and Co. to simply go out and spend big on every player they see.

It doesn’t work that way.

The Cowboys entered the offseason over the salary cap and had to make moves to get under the cap before the league new year. Even after doing that, finances were still very tight for Dallas, so it was unable to sign any free agents outside of linebacker Eric Kendricks.

Additionally, the Cowboys have to worry about paying quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge rusher Micah Parsons, so they need to save money for those players.

We can blast Dallas all we want for how it has handled contract negotiations with Prescott, but he is apparently asking for $60 million annually. You can understand why the Cowboys may feel comfortable allowing him to test the free-agent market next March with that asking price.

Yes, there are rumors Lamb may hold out, but there is still time for Dallas to get something done with him, and the recent reports that the Cowboys are growing tired of Parsons’ behavior probably don’t mean all that much, and that’s assuming the reports are even legitimate.

Dallas still has the NFL Draft later this month, and it still has months to go before training camp opens. Let’s wait until July before we make any snap judgments about how the Cowboys are looking heading into 2024.
