CULLODEN, WV (WOWK) – The ongoing Culloden Interchange Project is on schedule to finish construction by fall 2026.

The project is a part of Governor Jim Justice’s Road to Prosperity program, which will connect Route 60 to I-64 between Milton and Hurricane. It will cost about $36 million to complete according to a spokesperson with the West Virginia Department of Transportation.

A groundbreaking took place in November 2022, and construction is still underway along Benedict Road in Culloden near the interstate. While construction continues, local residents said it hasn’t been easy.

Much of Benedict Road has been torn up, including parts of several driveways. In turn, some neighbors like Michael Taylor have to find different places to park their cars.

“They told us if we planned on going to park out there because there’s going to be a huge drop off and no way of going anywhere. I’m not sure how long it’s going to be that way,” Taylor said.

Joe Browning has to find alternate routes to get in and out. He said he’s hopeful that the interchange will be worthwhile.

“I hate going through Hurricane. So I understand coming down here to get through all the stop lights and congestion,” Browning said.

For Taylor, he said raising his two-year-old boy during the construction has been challenging with the noise and dust.

“I understand why they’re doing it. The interstate will be right here,” Taylor said. “But personally, I would rather drive the five minutes and get on at Hurricane than deal with this all the time. Especially with a little two-year-old boy who I’m not sure is going to be able to play in the front yard anymore.”

The DOT tells 13 News they are hopeful that the end of the project will create economic development opportunities and cut down on lengthy commutes in the area, particularly in Culloden.
