BCA: Police shoot hatchet-wielding man dead in Crookston

    By Tommy Wiita,

Police in Crookston say a man wielding a hatchet was fatally shot by officers overnight Thursday.

The Crookston Police Department said officers found the man just before 1 a.m. in the area of East 7th Street. After making contact with him, the man "rapidly approached the officers."

Authorities used "less-lethal means" initially, but the man continued to approach the officers while swinging the hatchet, prompting officers to open fire.

Officers provided life-saving care at the scene, but the man later died at a local hospital.

The identities of all involved will be released at a later time.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the "use-of-force" incident.

The incident was isolated and there is no concern for public safety.
