Firefighters respond to fire on roof of Springfield farm supply store
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Firefighters responded on Thursday morning to a fire at Cascade Farm and Outdoor in east Springfield, according to Eugene Springfield Fire officials. ESF authorities said that firefighters responded at about 10:34 a.m. on May 9 to a report of a structure fire in the 5400 block of Main Street. A passerby reported to authorities that a 50-foot section of a building’s roof was on fire, according to authorities. Fire officials said that employees evacuated about 40 to 50 people from the business and ESF’s response included four engines, two ladder trucks, and an ambulance. Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire via an aerial ladder and did not locate any distressed individuals during a search of the building, according to ESF officials. Authorities said firefighters isolated the fire to a 50-by-50-foot section of the building’s roof and secured the building’s electrical utilities. There were no injuries reported, fire officials said. A store spokesperson said that damage estimates are currently unknown, power to the building was shut off, and the store was closed for the day as the investigation commenced.

Man who stabbed 7-Eleven clerk pleads guilty to assault
EUGENE, Ore. – The man accused of stabbing a 7-Eleven clerk earlier in 2024 has pleaded guilty to two charges filed against him. Back on January 4, police responded to a reported stabbing at a 7-Eleven on west Sixth Avenue. Eugene police said Robert Lee Childers, 40, of Springfield, had walked into the store, grabbed a few items, got into an argument with a clerk, stabbed the clerk, and left without paying for his items. Police said the clerk was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening wounds. Childers was arrested on January 7 and charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, and unlawful use of a weapon.
