Avenue A walking path to temporarily close for repairs following flood gate project
A section of the Avenue A walking path will temporarily close Thursday as contractors repair pavement damaged during construction of a flood control project, with the trail expected to reopen within 24 hours. The closure will affect a section of the path just south of the sewer lift station, across from Dippity Do-Da Dogs and the city’s stormwater pumping facility. Barricades will be placed on both sides of the work area while crews repave approximately 40 feet of the trail. Rome Water and Sewer Director John Boyd said the repairs are the final step in a roughly $625,000 project to rehabilitate a fail-safe flood gate built more than 85 years ago. “Rome Water and Sewer Division is also responsible for all the flood stations and the levee maintenance,” Boyd said. “We had a structure that’s known as a fail-safe gate that’s never been used. It was built in 1939 (and) needed some attention.” Boyd said heavy equipment needed to access the work site had to cross the walking trail, causing damage to the asphalt despite efforts to protect it during construction. “Before we close out that project, the contractor has to repair the damage that was done to the trail
