ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — James Moore, the longest-serving inmate in New York State, was confirmed dead by the NYS Department of Corrections.

Moore died on April 30, 2024, at Coxsackie Correctional Facility. His cause of death is still being determined and will be released by the Albany County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Moore was convicted in 1962 after he pled guilty to the murder of 14-year-old Pamela Moss. Investigators said he raped and strangled Moss. Moore was rejected parole 20 times over the years until he was finally granted parole in 2022.

According to DOCCS, he was granted the earliest release of June 6, 2022. However, they said he was unable to provide a proposed residence suitable to his needs. Moore was given recommendations for places that could give him care, but he refused.
