I know I say it every year around this time, but as someone who has lived all over the country and travels multiple times per month, there’s no place like OKC. That’s true of so many aspects of my adopted hometown, from its booming arts scene and its impending colossal coliseum to its characteristic neighborhoods, year-round events, world-class hotels and metropolitan developments. And the world is taking notice. Thanks to this year’s Route 66 centennial, bringing road-trippers from across the globe to our fair city, visitors are getting a real taste of what OKC is about. Coupled with our NBA Championship team and the 2028 Olympics, which OKC is co-hosting with Los Angeles, it’s hard not to take notice.

How 'Boomer Sooner,' 'Oklahoma!' became state's shared voice | Opinion

In 1953, a debate over Oklahoma’s state song was interrupted by a performance. Rep. George Nigh wanted to replace the solemn “Oklahoma, A Toast” with the title number from Rodgers' and Hammerstein’s musical. An opponent had defended the old song by singing it on the House floor. Nigh returned with a women’s college choir and Ridge Bond, an Oklahoma actor who had played Curly on Broadway. Bond came through the chamber door singing “Oklahoma!” The lawmakers stood and cheered. Nigh got his bill passed. The Oklahoma Historical Society preserves this wonderfully improbable episode. The Legislature had not been persuaded by a written argument alone. Its members had heard what the proposed anthem could do when sung by a roomful of people. When the Pride of Oklahoma strikes up “Boomer Sooner,” the song asks very little of anyone who knows it. The words are short. The tune is quick. Chicken Shack to reopen Lake Murray restaurant after Swadley's, Lookout Kitchen failures

Chicken Shack , a popular stop along Route 66 in Arcadia, is set to reopen the restaurant at Lake Murray State Lodge near Ardmore following two failed attempts by the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation to place all its park eateries under one operator. State tourism officials announced Wednesday, Oct. 28, the 6,000-square-foot restaurant, formerly home to Swadley's Foggy Bottom Kitchen and Lookout Kitchen , is expected to open this winter. “Lake Murray is one of Oklahoma’s most visited state parks, and we want every part of the experience we provide there to reflect what makes it such a special destination,” said Amy Blackburn, executive director of the state tourism department. “Bringing Chicken Shack into the lodge gives our guests another quality amenity and a place to gather and enjoy their time at the park.
