Rain, snowmelt push Upper Peninsula rivers toward flood stage
MARQUETTE, MI — Heavy rain and rapid snowmelt are driving a broad flood threat across the Upper Peninsula. Most of the Upper Peninsula is under a flood watch through Wednesday, April 15 following heavy rainfall that dropped 1 to 3 inches across the U.P. on Sunday, pushing rivers to or above flood stage and sending water into roads, parks and low-lying neighborhoods.

Sturgeon River flood warning endures amid mass Copper Country snowmelt
COPPER COUNTRY, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — Rain and heavy snow cover are causing flooding conditions across the region. A Flood Warning continues indefinitely for the Sturgeon River from Pelkie to Chassell. As of this morning, the Sturgeon had passed the bankfull stage. The National Weather Service anticipates the river will rise past flood stage today, crest at about two feet above flood stage Wednesday evening, recede temporarily, then resurge to nearly three feet above flood stage this weekend. Water levels may reach the bottom of Froberg bridge northeast of Pelkie, in addition to other bridges that cross the river. Rain is anticipated again tonight, with a thunderstorm possible. Additional rain could fall Thursday, and again Friday night. The Weather Service cautions that any low-lying areas around streams and rivers are at risk until the heavy snow pack is gone, and the ground thaws. Officials urge you not to try to drive through flooded areas. As little as six inches of moving water can stall a small car, and a foot can float most cars off the road. Turn around, and find an alternate route. COPYRIGHT 2026 BY MY UP NOW – WBUP/WJMN. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. THIS MATERIAL MAY NOT BE PUBLISHED,

More rain tonight with possible thunderstorms
Another round of rain, which could be a soaking rain or heavy rain is expected tonight. Combined with the snowmelt, this will continue to lead to areas of flooding. Do not drive through a flooded roadway or drive through any barricades. Remember, turn around, don't drown. Stronger thunderstorms also can't be ruled out tonight, large hail will be possible in the strongest thunderstorms. Flooding will remain a concern through the end of the week and possibly this weekend. Another system arrives Thursday with more rain, followed by a surge of warmth into the lower 70s on Friday for inland areas west of Marquette. This combination of rain and rapid snowmelt will cause significant river rises before much colder air and light snow return for the weekend. COPYRIGHT 2026 BY MY UP NOW – WBUP/WJMN. Spring brings Flood Watch as storms set to melt stacked UP snowpack
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN/WBUP) — A flood watch is in effect for the coming week as springlike warmth arrives in the wake of a historic blizzard and prolonged cold, according to the National Weather Service. Meteorologists say there’s already a large amount of water “locked up” across the region in ice and deep snow piles. "Then you add the rainfall and the possibility that a lot of the snowpack could disappear all at once over just a few days, you’re talking about even more water moving into an area, very quickly," said NWS-Marquette meteorologist Joe Phillips. Forecasters warn that a quick warmup — along with multiple rounds of thunderstorms expected to move through — could melt that snowpack rapidly and push water into creeks, rivers and low-lying areas that commonly flood during spring. At this point, the National Weather Service says minor flooding is the most likely outcome, and current projections do not show a high chance of more significant flooding.
